IS 1200 – Part 3 (Methods of Measurement of Building and Civil Engineering Works – Brickwork)

Published by: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
Scope:
This part lays down the rules for measuring brickwork (in walls, partitions, columns, arches, etc.) in building and civil engineering projects.

1. Scope

  • Applies to all types of brickwork (burnt clay bricks, fly ash bricks, etc.).
  • Covers both load-bearing and non-load-bearing walls.
  • Includes special cases such as arches, honeycomb walls, decorative brickwork, etc.

2. Unit of Measurement

  • Brickwork: measured in cubic metres (m³).
  • Brickwork in honeycomb, jali, openwork, edging, etc.: measured in square metres (m²).

3. Classification of Brickwork

Brickwork must be classified and measured separately based on:

  • Class/Type of brick (e.g., common burnt clay brick, fly ash brick).
  • Thickness of wall (half brick, one brick, one-and-a-half brick, etc.).
  • Type of mortar (cement mortar, lime mortar, mud mortar, etc.).
  • Location (foundation, plinth, superstructure, etc.).
  • Special features (arched work, ornamental, reinforced brickwork, honeycomb).

4. Method of Measurement

  • General brickwork (walls, columns, etc.):
    • Measured in cubic metres of solid work.
    • Thickness described as ½ brick (100 mm), 1 brick (200 mm), 1½ brick (300 mm), etc.
    • Description must state brick class, mortar type, and thickness.
  • Half-brick thick walls (partition walls):
    • Measured in square metres (m²).
    • Supported on RCC/other walls and bonded properly.
  • Arches, pillars, cornices, etc.:
    • Measured in , with description stating shape and type.
  • Honeycomb/Jali/Open Brickwork:
    • Measured in .
    • Net area of solid portion considered.

5. Deductions

  • For openings, doors, windows, etc.:
    • 0.1 m² → Deduct full opening.
    • ≤0.1 m² → No deduction.
  • For ends of joists, beams, rafters, etc.:
    • 0.01 m² cross-section → Deduct.
    • ≤0.01 m² → No deduction.
  • For circular or segmental openings: area/volume calculated as per geometry and deducted.
  • For reinforced brickwork: deduction made for reinforcement volume if >0.01 m³.

6. Extra Measurements

  • Arches: measured separately stating type (flat, segmental, semicircular).
  • Ornamental/Decorative brickwork: measured separately with description.
  • Reinforced brickwork (RBC): measured separately, reinforcement under Part 5 (steel).
  • Brick edging (for roads/pavements): measured in or running metres (m) depending on specification.

7. Key Notes

  • Thickness is always expressed in terms of brick (½, 1, 1½, etc.), not just mm.
  • For honeycomb brickwork, voids are not deducted separately; only solid portion is measured.
  • Mortar joints are included in measurement (no deductions).
  • Plastering/pointing over brickwork is measured separately (covered in Part 12 – Plastering & Pointing).

8. Quick Takeaways

  • Brickwork = m³, except ½ brick partitions & honeycomb = m².
  • Deductions only for openings >0.1 m².
  • Small recesses/embedded items ignored.

Reinforced, ornamental, and arch work measured separately.
