This class is a “catch-all” section used for items of civil engineering works that do not fall under any of the other CESMM classes (A–W). It provides flexibility to include specialized, project-specific, or non-standard items.
1. Scope
- Works not included elsewhere in CESMM classes.
- Covers special installations, minor works, temporary works, testing, trials, and accessories.
- Includes special protective treatments, proprietary systems, or non-standard components.
- Can also include plant hire, special transport, testing services, and trial operations.
2. Subdivision of Items
Items may be grouped under:
- Special protective treatments
- Fireproofing, anti-corrosion coating, chemical resistant lining.
- Special construction methods
- Underpinning, jacking, structural lifting, sliding, shoring, stabilization.
- Temporary or trial works
- Load tests (pile load test, plate load test, bridge load test).
- Trial mixes, mock-ups, prototype installations.
- Trial runs of mechanical/electrical systems.
- Specialized installations
- Vibration isolation pads, shock absorbers, acoustic barriers.
- Lightning protection, earthing pits (if not covered elsewhere).
- Anchors, rock bolts, ground anchors (if not classified under piling).
- Testing & quality checks
- NDT (Non-destructive testing – rebound hammer, ultrasonic pulse velocity, radiography, etc.).
- Core cutting and testing, cube testing (if specifically payable).
- Miscellaneous items
- Signage, name boards, milestones, kilometer stones.
- Site demobilization/clearance if separately paid.
- Special guarantees, extended maintenance obligations.
3. Method of Measurement
- By unit (No.) – for tests, signs, individual installations.
- By area (m²) – for coatings, linings, fireproofing.
- By length (m) – for rails, strips, anchors.
- By volume (m³ or litres) – for grouts, chemicals.
- By time (hour/day/week) – for plant hire, trial operation.
- Lump sum (LS) – for demobilization, mock-ups, prototypes.
4. Item Coverage
Unless otherwise stated, items include:
- All materials, labour, and plant.
- Surface preparation and finishing.
- Handling, placing, compacting, curing, protection.
- Testing, certification, guarantees.
- Temporary access/scaffolding as required.
5. Notes for BOQ Preparation
- Always specify clearly the scope, since “miscellaneous” can lead to disputes.
- State standards or methods (IS, ASTM, BS, Eurocode, manufacturer’s spec).
- Indicate whether testing, guarantees, maintenance are included or paid separately.
- Avoid using Class X as a dumping ground—only genuine unclassified items should be placed here.
6. Example BOQ Items
- X.1.1: Conducting plate load test on soil including supply of kentledge, jacks, dial gauges, and submission of report – measured per No.
- X.1.2: Providing and applying chemical resistant epoxy lining to RCC surface, 3 coats, 500 microns total thickness – measured per m².
- X.1.3: Providing and fixing retro-reflective road sign boards with aluminium sheets, posts, and foundation concrete – measured per No.
- X.1.4: Providing fireproof vermiculite spray to steel structures to achieve 2-hour fire rating – measured per m².
- X.1.5: Providing ground anchors with stressing and grouting, capacity 100 kN – measured per No.
- X.1.6: Demobilization of contractor’s plant, tools, temporary works, and clearance of site – Lump Sum.
- X.1.7: Conducting rebound hammer test on RCC structure, including equipment, manpower, and test report – measured per No. of tests.
✅ In summary:
Class X acts as a “flexible container” for works not specifically covered under other classes. It includes protective treatments, trial works, testing, fireproofing, chemical linings, anchors, signage, demobilization, and other project-specific items. Measurement is done in units, area, length, volume, time, or lump sum, depending on the nature of work.
