Class J – Pipework: Fittings and Valves

Scope

  • Covers pipe fittings, valves, specials, and other components associated with pipe systems.
  • Applies to both above-ground and below-ground pipework.
  • Complements Class I (Pipes).
  • Excludes:
    • Pipe lengths themselves → Class I
    • Pipe supports, hangers, and brackets → Class K
    • Chambers, manholes → Class E (Earthworks) or Class G (Concrete Ancillaries)

1. General Principles

  • Ancillaries = components required to complete the pipeline other than straight pipe lengths.
  • Always measured by number (No.), unless otherwise specified.
  • Rate includes:
    • Supply, delivery, unloading.
    • Fixing to pipes.
    • Jointing, welding, bolting, or mechanical fixing.
    • Testing and commissioning (where applicable).

2. Sub-classifications under Class J

J1 – Bends, Junctions, Specials

  • Bends (11.25°, 22.5°, 45°, 90°).
  • Tees, Y-junctions, Crosses.
  • Reducers, increasers.
  • Special fabricated sections (spools).
  • Measured by number (No.).
  • Must state material, diameter, angle, pressure class.

J2 – Valves

  • Gate valves, sluice valves, butterfly valves, non-return valves, air valves, scour valves, ball valves.
  • Must state:
    • Type (e.g., gate, butterfly).
    • Diameter (ID).
    • Pressure class (PN rating).
    • Operation (manual, geared, electric, pneumatic).
    • Location (in chamber, above ground).
  • Measured by number (No.).

J3 – Hydrants, Standpipes, Taps

  • Fire hydrants (single/double outlet).
  • Washout hydrants, standposts, water draw-off points.
  • Taps, bibcocks for service connections.
  • Measured by number (No.).

J4 – Chambers for Valves/Hydrants

  • Chambers (valve chambers, hydrant chambers, meter chambers) often measured separately in Class E (earthworks) or Class G (concrete).
  • But ancillaries (covers, frames, mechanical housing) may be included here.

J5 – Couplings, Flanges, Joints

  • Flexible couplings, flange adaptors, mechanical joints, expansion joints, puddle flanges.
  • Must specify: material, diameter, rating.
  • Measured by number (No.).

J6 – Meters and Instruments

  • Flow meters, pressure gauges, control instruments, regulators.
  • Must specify:
    • Type (electromagnetic, ultrasonic, turbine, etc.).
    • Range/size.
  • Measured by number (No.).

J7 – Miscellaneous Ancillaries

  • Vents, strainers, filters, arrestors, inspection eyes, stop ends.
  • Measured by number (No.).

3. Measurement Rules

  • Unit of measurement = number (No.).
  • Description must include:
    • Type (bend, valve, hydrant, etc.).
    • Material (DI, CI, steel, plastic, GRP, brass).
    • Size (diameter, PN pressure class).
    • Location (buried, above ground, chamber).
    • Method of operation (for valves, e.g., handwheel, geared, actuated).

4. Information to State in BOQ Description

Each ancillary description must specify:

  • Material & standard (DI to ISO 2531, CI to BS EN, steel to API, etc.).
  • Diameter/nominal bore.
  • Pressure class/PN rating.
  • Joint type (flanged, welded, push-fit, mechanical).
  • Coatings/lining (bitumen, epoxy, cement).
  • Testing requirements.

5. Example BOQ Items (Class J)

  1. Supply and install ductile iron bend, 45°, 200 mm dia, PN16, with push-fit socket joints, per number.
  2. Supply and install sluice valve, 250 mm dia, PN16, manual handwheel operated, complete with cast iron chamber cover, per number.
  3. Supply and install double air release valve, 80 mm dia, flanged, with epoxy coating, per number.
  4. Supply and install hydrant, single outlet, 100 mm dia, with valve chamber and cover, per number.
  5. Supply and install mechanical flexible coupling, 300 mm dia, epoxy coated, per number.
  6. Supply and install electromagnetic flow meter, 200 mm dia, with flanged ends and transmitter, per number.

Summary of Class J: Pipework — Ancillaries

  • Covers fittings, valves, specials, hydrants, meters, couplings.
  • Measured by number (No.).
  • Must state type, material, size, pressure class, jointing, location.
  • Complements Class I (Pipes).
